Spam Mitigation and Size Control in Permissionless Blockchains

The use of privacy technologies in a permissionless blockchain limits the use of many common anti spam measures and also limits the use of many measures to control the overall size of the blockchain. This is especially true where the transaction amount is not visible on the blockchain. Censorship is an example of such an anti spam and size limiting measure. Monero is a good example of a permissionless blockchain with a very high degree of fungibility, privacy and anonymity, that is not optional. We will examine the measures currently in use on the Monero blockchain to mitigate against spam and to control blockchain size with a particular emphasis on the most recent changes. This includes the use of pricing, monetary theory and dynamic limits. We will also examine current challenges including the measurement of technological change by the Monero blockchain and possible areas of research to address these challenges.
